Watson feels ‘stronger and faster’

4_zoom1Singer Russell Watson said he feels “stronger and faster” and is making good progress since undergoing treatment for a second brain tumour just over a year ago.

The 42-year-old underwent a life-saving operation and a five-week course of radiotherapy after the discovery of the tumour in October 2007.

Watson, who is known to fans as The Voice, said he now feels much better and is considering taking part in a 10k run in May.

Speaking at the launch of the Bupa Great Manchester Run, Watson said: “I’m contemplating running at the event. It’s going to be in the middle of my UK tour, so if I’m not somewhere down south or too far away I’d really like to do it. Recently I’ve started to get back into my fitness regime again and I’m enjoying it, so I’d like to.”

The former factory worker from Salford had emergency surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2006, but it returned the following year.

He said: “It was a tough old two or three years that I’ve had, but I’m feeling a lot better now – stronger and faster, maybe not better than I was before but getting there.”

Watson will be giving people a vocal send-off as they embark on the run, which is expected to attract up to 33,000 participants.

He was joined at the launch by actress Britt Ekland, a patron of Bupa’s nominated charity for 2009, the Alzheimer’s Society.

The former Bond girl, whose mother suffered from Alzheimer’s, said she might also be persuaded to take part in the run with a special friend.

“It depends on where I am. If I am here I probably won’t be running but I’ll do a power walk,” she said.
